The sleep environment is the most underestimated factor in children's sleep. Temperature, light, and noise measurably affect sleep quality — and can be optimised with just a few changes.

Why is 18–20 °C so important — and what happens when it is too warm?
A simple test: if the child frequently wakes up without a duvet or is sweating, the room is too warm. The target range is 18 °C in winter, up to 20 °C in summer. Underfloor heating can be deceiving — air temperature is what counts, not floor temperature.
How much light is really too much at night?
Practical solution: blackout curtains or blinds, chargers out of the room, and no screens in the 60 minutes before bed. Red night lights (wavelength 620–750 nm) barely affect melatonin — that is the best compromise for children who are afraid of the dark.
When does silence become a problem — and what is white noise?
White noise works because it contains all frequencies evenly — the brain quickly gets used to it and filters it as neutral. Volume: no louder than 50 dB (roughly the sound of a refrigerator). Important: do not place the speaker directly next to the child's head.

Only if they are afraid without light. In that case: as dim as possible, and in red or amber tones — these wavelengths barely suppress melatonin production.
Does my child sleep better with or without music?
Music with melody and rhythm keeps the brain active. White or brown noise without any recognisable structure is better — the brain can let it go rather than tracking along.
What about the child's bed being right next to the radiator?
Not ideal. Next to the radiator, temperatures in winter are often 2–4 °C warmer than in the rest of the room. If possible, move the bed to the opposite wall.
